At Juvelisto we use modern laser soldering in addition to traditional torch soldering techniques for fabricating and repairing jewellery. Also known as laser welding, this technology allows our skilled goldsmiths to fix delicate or complicated items that might otherwise be damaged by a torch.
A jeweller’s torch is used to heat the metal of a jewellery piece to a high enough temperature that solder will flow into a joint to create a bond. This high temperature can damage heat-sensitive gemstones or delicate design elements, such as filigree or engraving. We must often remove the stones, and then reset them once the repair has been safely performed or avoid the repair completely if there is no way to protect the piece.
A laser welder, however, uses a beam of amplified light to create a a small heat zone. Using precise heat in a small area enables us to work in close proximity to heat sensitive gemstones, pearls, and fragile design features, such as enamel, without doing any harm.
Prior to laser soldering technology, many jewellery repairs would not have been possible or would have been prohibitively expensive due to the time and labour required. Equipped with state-of-the-art laser welding equipment, our skilled staff can now perform a wide range of complex repairs, including:
• antique jewellery restoration and repairs
• costume jewellery repair
• delicate chain repair
• heirloom jewellery repair
• ring resizing, retipping prongs, repairing bezel settings
• reassembly of broken necklaces, bracelets, and earrings
• repairs to jewellery with heat-sensitive gemstones
• repairs to jewellery with glass stones or cubic zirconia
Since every jewellery repair is unique, we will need to see your piece to determine how best to fix it. Please visit our studio with your broken jewellery item(s) and we will provide an assessment and quote for you.
