Diamond Types

Another element to consider when choosing a diamond is whether it’s natural, lab-grown, or synthetic. You may also choose to seek diamonds that were mined using ethical practices, such as Canadian diamonds.

Natural Diamonds

Made of carbon and created over a period of one to three billion years, natural diamonds are formed at least 85 miles below the earth's mantle.

A natural diamond undergoes extreme high pressure and high temperature before journeying through molten rock to the earth's surface where it is then mined, refined, and transformed into jewellery or used in industrial applications.

Lab-Grown Diamonds

Lab-grown diamonds, a.k.a lab-created or man-made, are produced in a lab under conditions of extreme high pressure and high temperature, identical to those that occur when a natural diamond is formed.

The result is a stone that has the same chemical, physical, and optical properties of a natural diamond.

Lab diamonds undergo the same certification & grading standards as natural diamonds and are typically 30% less expensive than their natural counterparts of comparable size & quality.

Synthetic Diamonds

Synthetic diamonds, a.k.a. simulated diamonds are not the same as lab-grown diamonds. They are alternatives to natural and lab-grown diamonds.

Examples of synthetic diamonds include cubic zirconia, white sapphire, moissanite, zircon, rutile, and spinel.
